The building authority of local government district Dahme-Spreewald has granted a further building permit to the airport company to ensure the airport train station’s scenarios of service according to planning approval given in August 2004.

Building permission addendum 6.1 regulates fire safety issues at the interface between the airport and the underground train station. To avoid impact on the train station in occurrence of fire in the airport, intended structuraladjustments in the distribution level of the passenger terminal have building permission.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, Chief Executive Officer of Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: “This conformation is not just of great significance on the road to launching BER. After the implementation of the now approved measures, the train station can be used to its full capacity and long after 2020 will guarantee quick and secure accessibility to the ever-expanding BER.”

A structural feature of BER is building a part of the airport on top of the underground train station. Passengers can circulate between terminal and train station without interjacent doors.

The escape route of the train station leads thought the airport’s distribution level. Therefore, the use of the train station for passengers links to the opening of the airport.
