Budapest Airport’s runway active with runners

On Saturday 18 September 2021 Budapest Airport Runway 13R-31L nearly 700 runners lined up on the start line for the ninth Budapest Airport-anna.aero Runway Run – the air transport industry’s annual charity run which, through hard work and determination, continues to raise donations for the deserving causes the run has supported since 2013.

Generating more than €200,000 since its beginning, the run’s objectives remain the same – to provide opportunities for people living with injuries and disabilities and assist in finding treatment for patients suffering from leukaemia.

Thanks to partner Lufthansa Technik, main sponsors Turkish Cargo, KPMG, SITA and Z&Z, and supporting sponsors Heinemann, Nurti8, Primavera, and Smarteq, the Hungarian gateway has once again been able to realise its goal.

The Runway Run is an invitational run, the field being made up of representatives from the aviation industry, authorities, airlines, and other major international companies, as well as prominent athletes.

Closing what is normally an active runway, Budapest remains the only airport in Europe to be able to stage such an event in broad daylight and allow runners to take part in this rare experience.

There are always many prizes to be won: fastest male and female runners, fastest visually impaired, pushchair and handbike, and for every business partner taking part with this year’s top prizes going to:

  • Fastest Airline: Wizz Air
  • Fastest Authority: National Tax and Customs
  • Fastest Aviation Business Service partner: Aeroplex
  • Fastest Airport concessionaire: Gebr. Heinemann Duty Free

Speaking at the prize-giving on the concourse of the airport’s historic Terminal 1, Budapest Airport CEO Chris Dinsdale said: “Today was another great event, one we are honoured to host while helping others improve their lives.

“We’re proud of all our competitors who took part, helping to promote our airport during our regrowth, and this fantastic city, while allowing us to donate 100% of entrance fees to the benefitting charities.

“This event continues to be a winning formula for all.”
