Hermes airport win awards in environmental policy

Hermes Airports has received three major awards by the Environmental Department, in the framework of the Cyprus GPP (Green Public Procurement) Awards. The contest is held annually in cooperation with the Cyprus Energy Agency and for the first time, organizations from the private sector have also participated.

More specifically, Hermes Airports won the awards of «General Environmental Policy», «Internal Lighting» and «Energy Performance of Building Facilities», thus recognizing the effectiveness of Hermes’ environmental policy, its efforts to save energy and reduce the carbon dioxide emissions.

The awards were handed over by Mr Nicos Kouyialis, Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, to Mr Demetris Demetriou, Manager of the Department of Safety, Health and Environment of Hermes Airports.

During the same event, the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, officially delivered to Hermes the European EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) certification which the company has granted recently for Larnaka Airport.

The European EMAS certification, is considered to be the most rigorous certification provided to organizations and companies in Europe regarding the implementation of environmentally friendly procedures and practices which also promote, among others, energy saving, protection of the aquifers and seas, recycling and reuse of waste materials.

In a statement, Ms Eleni Kaloyirou, Hermes Airports Chief Executive Officer, said she was delighted with the company’s new awards, noting also that «the continual distinctions and first awards of Hermes in this field are the most resounding confirmation of its genuine interest and effectiveness regarding its environmental practices. We will continue with the same determination towards the goals set in our green policy», Ms Kaloyirou concluded.

Within the framework of its corporate social responsibility, during the last years, Hermes has been implementing a comprehensive environmental strategy that includes investments of hundreds of thousand euros on new infrastructures and procedures that promote environmental protection, recycling and energy saving.
