The extension of the north terminal at Macau International Airport (MIA) has been completed and the building has officially opened to passengers. Mott MacDonald has been involved in the project since concept, providing a range of engineering and advisory services.
In 2017, MIA handled over seven million passengers, recorded over 58,000 aircraft movements and transported 37,000 tonnes of cargo. These are the highest figures seen at the airport in its 22 years of operation and the reason why it is currently ranked ninth in the world when comparing passenger traffic volume with local population figures.
The expansion of the north terminal consisted of a new four-storey extension to the existing building, covering an area of approximately 14,000 sq m. The expanded building will increase the terminal’s annual capacity to 7.8 million passengers, meeting anticipated future passenger demand.
Mott MacDonald delivered airport planning, engineering consultancy and technical advisory services during the initial conceptual study for the expansion.
This included conducting passenger flow analysis to determine the required facilities for the departures and arrivals halls, as well as costing and investment analysis. The consultancy then provided the same services during the project’s construction phase, including structural, electrical and mechanical engineering, airport systems planning and contract advisory.
