SFO Wins Partnering Award for Runway Improvement Project

The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) announced that an accelerated runway improvement project has been honored for using a partnering approach to construction.

The International Partnering Institute (IPI) recognized SFO with their 2023 John L. Martin Partnered Project of the Year for a project which repaved the Airport’s longest runway, 28R.

Originally slated for repaving in 2022, SFO chose to accelerate the project by a full year to spring 2021 to take advantage of reduced flight schedules resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Any runway improvement project is a massive undertaking, but accelerating such work by a full year requires the total commitment of our entire project team,” said Airport Director Ivar C. Satero.

“Once again, the partnering approach allowed us to accomplish the extraordinary, completing much-needed work with minimal impact to airlines and their passengers.

“My thanks go out to the entire project team and to the International Partnering Institute for this honor.”

The Runway 28R project repaved the surface layer, constructed two new taxiways, expanded eight runway-taxiway intersections, and improved lighting infrastructure.

During the four-month runway closure in the spring and summer of 2021, the project team accomplished the following:

•  Paved the equivalent of 75 football fields
•  Laid over 60 miles of cabling for tarmac lighting infrastructure
•  Installed over 2,000 feet of pipes for drainage
•  Coordinated more than 1,000 truck deliveries onto the tarmac each day
