The first electric ambulance for airport rescue services has entered service at Torino Airport.
Turin is the first airport in Italy, and one of the first in Europe, to be equipped with a CO2-neutral vehicle to provide medical assistance to passengers and airport users.
The electric ambulance is part of the process of replacing the airport’s fleet with hybrid or fully electric vehicles and represents a step forward in Torino Green Airport’s environmental sustainability path, with the aim of achieving zero emissions under its own control well ahead of the 2050 deadline.
The electric vehicle is powered by two 100 A/h lithium batteries with a range of up to 6 hours, which can be fully recharged in about 4 hours thanks to two 25-amp chargers.
The lithium batteries last twice as long as those traditionally used and, at the end of their life, can be reconditioned and reused in a circular economy.
The ambulance also has state-of-the-art solar panels installed on the roof, capable of delivering up to 20A/h in ideal weather conditions, to meet the energy requirements of the medical equipment on board.
The equipment installed on the electric ambulance is the same as that of a traditional ambulance (stretcher, lounge chair, oxygen system and aspirator), with the addition of an ozonator designed specifically for the airport vehicle to sanitise the environment.
The interior of the electric ambulance is made of PVCE, a plastic material that is easy to recycle and, unlike the resins normally used, does not break on impact, but deforms and does not release harmful dust. All fittings, such as handles and cabinet hinges, are made of metal.
The exterior paintwork is made up of high-intensity reflective strips; to increase the vehicle’s brightness and safety at night, a specially designed underbody system has been installed to create a high-visibility light island.
