VRR unveils the first ever collapsible main deck container

The world’s first ever fully certified collapsible deck container will be unveiled by VRR for Boeing 737 and 757 freighters at Inter Airport Europe in Munich, Germany.

The AAY container weighs 280 kilos and can be erected and collapsed by two people in just two minutes.

It can be stacked up to four high on a 737F’s main deck and six high on the lower deck of a wide-body aircraft.

When folded, the container is seven times smaller and has a height of 25 centimetres.

“The collapsible AAY container is the answer to the global imbalance in main deck containers. The digitisation of container fleets is giving fleet managers much better insight into container utilisation and revealing all sorts of repositioning issues. Incorporating the collapsible AAY into a container fleet will produce significant cost savings.” Geert van Riemsdijk, managing director of VRR.

VRR says the collapsible product provides customers with reduced container volumes, giving them more flexibility while significantly decreasing the environmental impact.

“With volumes roughly four to five times larger than their lower-deck equivalent, their storage and repositioning requirements are much more costly and challenging.”

VRR says trade lanes are becoming more imbalanced due to increased traffic and the rise of e-commerce.

Lower-deck containers make up the majority of the global ULD fleet but the larger main-deck containers used by many freighters make a substantial impact on the global imbalance.
